Work to start on £500,000 upgrade of Hebden Bridge station

Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, lies on the Calder Valley line.

Hebden Bridge station, on the Calder Valley line which runs from York to Manchester Victoria via Bradford, is about to undergo a £500,000 upgrade, the latest in a series of interventions that are keeping the original 1893 buildings in good shape.

New lifts were installed and commissioned in 2019, making Platform 1 accessible to those with impaired movement, heavy luggage and children. Platform 2 had been accessible for some time, but Platform 1 had not after the lifts to the subway were taken out of service in the 1980s.

The station building at Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, is to be upgraded.

The latest work will see repairs and strengthening work carried out to the roof, as well repairs to the slates, making it look more attractive. Work will also take place to refurbish windows at the station. As the station is Grade II listed, the work will be carried out in a way which preserves its heritage.

Matthew Rice, Network Rail.

Work on the project will be complete in late March and will not impact on train services, but passengers using the station will notice the project taking place.

Network Rail’s route director for its North and East route, Matthew Rice, said: “This is a vital project which will ensure that this historic building can be enjoyed by passengers for years to come.

“We are working hard to keep the impact of this work on station users to a minimum, but passengers will notice scaffolding and workers on site.”

Steve Hopkinson, Northern.

Northern regional director Steve Hopkinson added: “It’s great to see the investment in the station facilities at Hebden Bridge. This is a vital station for so many people and a crucial part of our network through the Calder Valley.

“We’re working closely with colleagues at Network Rail to make sure the work is carried out in a way which minimises disruption and keeps our customers on the move.”
