Bombardier delivers first of 47 new trams to Duisburg, Germany

The first of 47 new trams being delivered to Duisburg by Bombardier Transportation.

Bombardier Transportation has delivered the first of the Flexity low-floor trams it is manufacturing for Duisburg in Germany. Comprehensive test and approval runs on the local network will start shortly.

Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft AG ordered a fleet of 47 trams from Bombardier in December 2017 under a contract worth approximately €132 million. The new three-car trams are 70% low floor, 34 meters long, 2.3 meters wide and able to transport up to 200 passengers. Two additional doors in the end cars and one in the middle car result in better accessibility and shorter dwell times.

Duisburg’s new Flexity trams can each carry 200 people.

In addition, the trams are equipped with air conditioning and a high-tech passenger information system to keep passengers informed about upcoming stops and connections.

The modern trams are equipped with Bombardier’s Obstacle Detection and Assistance System (ODAS), the world’s first approved image-based driver assistance system that helps to prevent collisions. It anticipates possible collisions with pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles, sends an alarm to the driver and can initiate braking.

The lower part of the tram bodies also feature two concealed impact elements, as well as flexible, soft trim parts, to give even more protection for road users.
